Strawberry Banana Atomic Cake

Build a four-layer masterpiece with strawberries and bananas between layers and whipped topping covering the cake. On top, more bananas and strawberries, plus chocolate shavings around the outside.

Batter
  1. Prepare batter according to package directions.
  2. Deposit 1 lb into each of 8 greased 8-inch round cake pans.
  3. Bake as directed on package and cool completely.
Filling
  1. Slice bananas into large bowl with lemon juice; gently toss to coat and set aside 24 slices.
  2. Slice 12 strawberries in half and set aside.
  3. Dice remaining strawberries; add to bowl along with strawberry glaze.
  4. Stir together gently and set aside.
  5. Whisk heavy cream to stiff peaks and set aside.
Finishing
  1. Slice each cake in half horizontally; place 4 of the layers on separate 9-inch paper-lined cake boards.
  2. Spread 3/4 cup of whipped cream evenly over top, followed by 4 oz banana strawberry mixture and add another cake layer.
  3. Repeat, spreading 3/4 cup whipped cream and 4 oz banana strawberry mixture; add another cake layer.
  4. Repeat again, spreading 3/4 cup whipped cream and 4 oz banana strawberry mixture; add a final cake layer.
  5. Frost entire cake with whipped cream; smooth sides with icing comb.
  6. Pipe 12 evenly spaced rosettes on tops of cakes with remaining whipped cream.
  7. Place reserved strawberry halves and banana slices on rosettes, alternating them.
  8. Garnish sides with 1 oz chocolate shavings (use a vegetable peeler if desired).
