Grandma's Old-Fashioned Cake Bar

This recipe takes you back to the childhood treats grandma made. Gold Medal™ Yellow Cake Mix, pineapple, walnuts, all topped with a cooked icing. Grandma would be proud!

Evaporated milk, canned

Batter
  1. Stir 6 1/2 cups yellow cake mix, crushed pineapple (undrained) and water in mixing bowl until just combined.
  2. Pour batter evenly into greased or parchment-lined full sheet pan; spread evenly.
  3. Combine remaining yellow cake mix, walnuts and brown sugar in separate mixing bowl; sprinkle evenly over batter.

*Rotate pans baked in convection oven one-half turn (180°) after 15 minutes of baking.
Topping
  1. Combine butter, evaporated milk, sugar and vanilla extract in small saucepan.
  2. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally until sugar is dissolved (mixture will be thin).
  3. Remove from heat and pour over hot cake; spread with sprayed offset spatula as needed.
  4. Allow to cool before serving.

  • Tip: Dust lightly with powdered sugar before serving, if desired. Make a Pi–a Colada Cake Bar by adding 2 cups shredded coconut and 2 tsp rum extract to batter. Note, nutrition information may change.
