German Chocolate Bars

A tempting devil's food cake is a treat in itself… but add a classic topping of coconut, molasses and pecans, and the German chocolate cookie bar has reached a whole new level of deliciousness.

Pecan pieces, toasted

Coconut, toasted

Chocolate Bar
  1. Mix brown sugar, butter and eggs in mixer bowl with paddle attachment on low speed 1 minute.
  2. Stop mixer, scrape bowl and paddle. Mix on low speed additional 1 minute.
  3. Add cake mix, water and chocolate chips. Mix 2 minutes on low speed or until well combined. Do not overmix.
  4. Deposit dough evenly with floured hands into greased or parchment-lined full sheet pan.
  5. Bake as directed below and allow bars to cool.

*Rotate pans baked in convection oven one-half turn (180°) after 13 minutes of baking.
Finishing
  1. Mix vanilla icing and molasses in mixer bowl with paddle attachment on low speed 2 minutes.
  2. Add pecans and coconut and mix 1 minute more.
  3. Spread icing on completely cooled bars; cut and serve.
